The 2011 Missouri Governor’s Cup award was presented to Blumenhof Vineyards and Winery at a ceremony held May 10, 2012, at the Capitol building in Jefferson City. Blumenhof’s 2010 Valvin Muscat was chosen as the best of 266 wines entered in the Governor’s Cup competition by 35 different Missouri wineries. This marked the first year the award was given to Blumenhof, as well as the first year the winning wine was made from hybrid Valvin Muscat grapes. Gov. Jay Nixon and First Lady Georganne Nixon presented the coveted award to Blumenhof owner Mark Blumenberg and his son, Eric. In a press release, Blumenberg attributed the wine’s exceptional taste to the quality of the grapes he used to make it. “I honestly don’t think I did anything to make that wine better,” he said. “It’s all on the grapes.” Blumenberg stated that he was “lucky” to have chosen to plant the Valvin Muscat grapes a few years ago, because the wine has “lived up to my expectations every year.” Aside from the Governor’s Cup trophy, judges grant gold, silver, and bronze medals to outstanding wines submitted for adjudication each year. The 2012 Missouri Governor’s Cup competition will take place Aug. 1-2.
